The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is deeply worried about the growing problem of cable theft, a crime causing significant disruption in our community. This illegal activity not only disrupts important services but also poses serious risks and challenges for Matjhabeng residents.
Recent reports of cable theft have come from key areas, like the bold theft of cables from various places, including the Heavy Industrial Area in Odendaalsrus, Welkom, and Bedelia. Also, incidents like damaging a pillar box and setting fire to a substation in Welkom CBD have worsened the situation.
These crimes have serious effects beyond just being inconvenient. They impact the safety, security, and well-being of Matjhabeng residents.
Power disruptions not only cause discomfort but also affect essential services like street lighting, telecommunications, and public infrastructure. Businesses also suffer financial losses due to power cuts and communication breakdowns, slowing down economic growth in the region....
In a troubling incident, a water pipe in Meloding, Virginia, was deliberately destroyed after municipal efforts to repair it, leaving the community without water for weeks. This shows the severe consequences of damaging infrastructure.
Destroying municipal infrastructure, especially water facilities, has serious consequences. Schools struggle to provide clean water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene, affecting the health and safety of learners and teachers and undermining education quality. Healthcare facilities also struggle with water shortages, while businesses and residents face disruptions to daily life and economic activities.

By working together with residents of Matjhabeng, we can protect our infrastructure, ensure essential services continue uninterrupted, and make Matjhabeng safer and more resilient.

It is important for residents to understand the importance of protecting and preserving municipal infrastructure for the benefit of the whole community. Let us stand together against vandalism and work towards building a resilient and prosperous Matjhabeng.
