The Era of Lawlessness is Over

The Era of Lawlessness is Over: Matjhabeng Takes Action to Restore Order in the CBD. The Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Thanduxolo Khalipha, accompanied by the Executive Director of Public Safety and a dedicated team of traffic officers, led a robust and visible law enforcement campaign in the Welkom Central Business District (CBD)....

This operation was launched in direct response to growing concerns about lawlessness, particularly among motorists who blatantly disregard traffic regulations.
During the operation, fines were issued to vehicles parked in no-parking zones, those with expired vehicle license disks, those without valid drivers licenses, and others found violating various traffic laws. Several vehicles were impounded after their owners attempted to evade enforcement efforts.
The message is clear: Matjhabeng will no longer tolerate reckless driving and disregard for municipal by-laws. The Executive Mayor emphasised that traffic officers are expected to enforce the law consistently and without compromise.

Strengthening the enforcement of municipal by-laws is critical to restoring order, enhancing road safety, and protecting law-abiding citizens.
This campaign is also part of a broader strategy to improve public safety, particularly for women and young girls who face growing threats from individuals masquerading as taxi operators.
These operations aim to curb such criminal behavior and ensure that Matjhabeng’s streets remain safe and secure for all. The Municipality calls on residents to cooperate with law enforcement officials and to report any suspicious or unlawful activity. A safe and orderly Matjhabeng requires a shared commitment from both the authorities and the community.

Focused citywide streetlight restoration campaign

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has launched a focused citywide streetlight restoration campaign as part of our commitment to creating safer, well-lit, and more livable communities. This initiative aims to repair and restore non-functional streetlights across all towns within Matjhabeng, starting with key areas in Welkom.

A well-lit urban environment not only enhances visibility and public safety but also contributes to the overall sense of security for residents, businesses, and road users.
Our teams are on the ground, working diligently to restore lighting infrastructure and improve the quality of life in our communities.

However, persistent challenges such as vandalism and cable theft continue to undermine our progress. These criminal acts not only delay the restoration process but also divert resources that could be used to further improve service delivery. Below are aerial shots of Tempest Road, Constantia, and Jan Hofmeyer in Welkom, where restoration work is currently underway. Sadly, recent incidents of vandalism have already occurred in areas like Stateway and Long Road.
While the Municipality is intensifying security efforts to protect critical infrastructure, we urgently call on residents, community structures, and stakeholders to work with us in reporting and preventing acts of theft and vandalism.

SERVICE DELIVERY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

ACTING MUNICIPAL MANAGER ENGAGES MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS ON SERVICE DELIVERY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE. The Acting Municipal Manager of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Mr. Thabo Panyani, recently convened a strategic engagement session with senior management and all municipal officials to outline the direction and priorities of the municipality moving forward....

This session formed part of a broader effort to align internal operations with the municipality’s vision of effective, transparent, and people-centred governance.
During the session, the Municipal Manager delivered a comprehensive presentation detailing a renewed and robust approach to service delivery.

He emphasised the importance of restoring public trust by ensuring that residents receive quality services delivered with diligence, respect, and a deep sense of accountability.
All officials and employees were called upon to actively contribute to this mission, reaffirming that service excellence begins from within.

Matjhabeng Local Municipality remains committed to championing the agenda of a responsive, transparent, and community-driven government — one that listens, acts, and delivers.
The Municipal Manager also reflected candidly on the current financial state of the municipality. He unpacked the operational Patala campaign – an initiative aimed at encouraging residents and businesses to settle their municipal accounts to support improved service delivery.

He appealed to municipal staff to lead by example by honouring their own service payments, reinforcing a culture of responsibility and integrity.
Finally, the Municipal Manager commended the dedication and efforts of employees who continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to turning Matjhabeng around. Their contribution, he noted, is key to rebuilding the municipality and fulfilling its developmental mandate.
