Matjhabeng Local Municipality Hosts Mayoral Cup Finals for Youth and Women’s Football.
Yesterday, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality kicked off the finals of the Matjhabeng Mayoral Cup, showcasing youth football and netball talent across the region.
The tournament featured teams in three age categories—under 13, under 15, and under 17—competing for the top prize in both the Gents and Ladies divisions. Teams coming from Nyakallong, Meloding, Kutlwanong, and Thabong battled it out in an exciting display of skill, determination, and community spirit....
The initiative is spearheaded by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sports, Arts, and Culture, Cllr. Malehlohonolo Moipatli, as part of the municipality's efforts to promote sports development, social cohesion, and youth engagement within Matjhabeng.
The tournament is set to conclude today, with the under 19, Open, and Masters divisions taking the field.
The second day promises even more thrilling action as teams from across the municipality aim to claim the prestigious title.
In attendance at yesterday’s event was Acting Mayor, Cllr. Hlobohang Mokhomo, who was joined by MMC for Community Services and Law Enforcement, Cllr. Tlake Reuben, and Head of Department, Advocate Lauretta Van Wyk. Also present were MMC for Strategic Support and IDP, Cllr. Mojabeng Radebe; Ward 16 Cllr. Modula; Cllr. Pule Maile; and the District Council Chief Whip, Cllr. Meli, all of whom lent their support to the event, further solidifying the municipality's commitment to grassroots sports development.
The Matjhabeng Mayoral Cup is set to become a flagship event, fostering community unity and providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents, inspiring future generations of sports enthusiasts in the region.

Matjhabeng Local Municipality celebrated Heritage Day today with a colorful event held at Ferdie Meyer Hall, organised by the office of the Executive Mayor.
Employees from all departments embraced the spirit of the day by preparing traditional foods and donning various cultural attires, showcasing the rich diversity within the municipality....
In his address, Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr. Hlobohang Mokhomo, extended his gratitude to all employees present and wished them well as they commemorated Heritage Day. 
He also shared a brief history of how Matjhabeng Local Municipality got its name, highlighting the pride the municipality takes in its diverse communities, which he described as one of its greatest strengths.
Cllr. Mokhomo further challenged othe MMC for Sports, Arts, and Culture, Cllr. Moipatli, to spearhead efforts to revive indigenous games within Matjhabeng.
He emphasised the importance of engaging children in these traditional activities to preserve the municipality's heritage and cultural arts for future generations.
This event not only celebrated the vibrant cultural heritage of Matjhabeng but also reinforced the municipality's commitment to promoting unity through diversity.

The Acting Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Hlobohang Mokhomo, today welcomed the Minister of Small Business Development, Honourable Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, at a ceremony held at Toronto Hall in Welkom.
The Minister handed over business equipment to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through various support initiatives, including the Asset Assist Program, the Cooperatives Development Support Programme, and the Informal and Micro Enterprise Development Programme....
This ministerial handover aims to equip micro-enterprise owners with the tools they need to grow and sustain their businesses.
In his opening remarks, Acting Mayor Mokhomo expressed his gratitude to the Minister and her department for providing this crucial equipment, which signifies a shared commitment to empowering small enterprises and cooperatives, particularly in townships and rural areas.
He reiterated that these initiatives from the Department of Small Business Development are more than just a transfer of assets, they represent a broader vision for an inclusive and dynamic economy, where everyone, regardless of background or location, has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to South Africa's economic growth.
He emphasised that local economic development is one of Matjhabeng Local Municipality's top five priorities, with the goal of positioning Matjhabeng as a preferred investment destination and an economic hub.
He added that the municipality is grateful for this initiative by Honourable Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, as it benefits participants in Matjhabeng, and reiterated Matjhabeng's commitment to working with the business sector to create an environment that fosters economic opportunities for everyone, especially those previously marginalized.
The rollout of these support programmes reflects the ongoing efforts of the Department of Small Business Development, under the leadership of Honourable Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams, to ensure that small businesses and cooperatives are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to thrive.
It is a testament to the government's dedication to ensuring that economic empowerment reaches even the most underserved communities.
The Acting Mayor said that Matjhabeng Local Municipality is proud to host such a significant event, which reinforces its commitment to promoting sustainable economic opportunities and fostering an environment where entrepreneurship can flourish.

On Saturday, 21 September 2024, the Acting Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Hlobohang Mokhomo, joined MEC Elzabe Rockman at the Youth in Agriculture Dialogue, a programme hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at Toronto Hall, Welkom.
The dialogue, themed "An Integrated Approach to Youth Participation in Sustainable Agricultural Production, Food Security, and Economic Growth," sparked crucial conversations aimed at empowering youth to actively engage in agriculture....
In his opening remarks, Cllr. Mokhomo expressed gratitude to the Department for selecting Matjhabeng as the host.
He emphasised that the future of agriculture lies in the hands of young people, and their participation is important in addressing key challenges such as climate change, unemployment, and food security.
"Agriculture is not only the backbone of our local economy but also a key driver of sustainable development and food security. The involvement of youth in agriculture is more important than ever," said Cllr. Mokhomo.
The Acting Executive Mayor also highlighted the municipality’s commitment to supporting initiatives that drive economic growth, particularly in agriculture, which provides sustainable livelihoods for young people.
Matjhabeng’s Local Economic Development (LED) Department has a dedicated division for agriculture, recognising it as the second-largest sector after mining, which is in decline.
The dialogue featured presentations on CASP/ILIMA funding, land access, NYDA services, and Smart Agriculture, equipping youth with the tools and knowledge necessary for success in this critical sector.
Cllr. Mokhomo was accompanied by his team, including Mr. Eddie Thoabala, who is responsible for Agriculture in the Municipality.
The Acting Executive Mayor also acknowledged MEC Rockman for spearheading this important developmental programme aimed at empowering young people in the agricultural sector.
