Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha Mourns the Tragic Passing of Young Lehlohonolo
Buthelezi.
The Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Thanduxolo Khalipha, has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic
death of Lehlohonolo Buthelezi, a young child who drowned on Friday, 4 July 2025, after falling into a water-filled trench at a
construction site in Meloding....
Yesterday, the Executive Mayor, accompanied by Members of the Mayoral Committee — Cllr. Buti Mojalefa and Cllr. Buda Ramalefane —
together with Ward Councillor Khepheng, visited the bereaved family to offer heartfelt condolences and extend the municipality’s full
support during this painful time.
During the visit, the Executive Mayor conveyed his deep sympathy to the Buthelezi family, assuring them that the Municipality stands
with them in their grief. He further committed that an internal investigation is currently underway, and that a comprehensive report
will be obtained from all relevant departments and authorities to understand the circumstances that led to the incident.
“It is truly heartbreaking to lose such a young life in this manner,” said the Executive Mayor. “Lehlohonolo was a symbol of innocence
and promise — a life that held so much potential. We mourn with the family and want them to know that they are not alone in this moment
of deep sorrow.”
In addition, the Executive Mayor has instructed a dedicated team from his office to work closely with the Ward Councillor and the
Buthelezi family to provide logistical support as they make arrangements during this difficult period.
He has also called on all stakeholders — including the Departments of Health and Social Development — to provide trauma counselling and
emotional support services to the grieving family.
Looking ahead, Mayor Khalipha reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to engage all contractors and project teams to review and
strengthen safety protocols on construction sites, especially in residential areas, to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
“Let this tragedy not be in vain,” he added. “It must compel us all to do more in safeguarding the lives of our children and communities.”
The Municipality joins the family, friends, and residents of Meloding in mourning the untimely passing of Lehlohonolo Buthelezi.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
