The Matjhabeng Water Steering Committee recently conducted a site visit to the Balkfontein Water Treatment Plant
as part of its ongoing efforts to address the persistent water challenges facing the Municipality. The visit was
essential in assessing the current state of water infrastructure, understanding operational
constraints, and exploring solutions to improve water supply to communities.
The delegation was led by the Chief Whip of Council, Cllr. Marabane Setabela-Lesenyeho, and comprised Councillors
from various political parties who are actively involved in the committee's efforts to resolve the water crisis.
The members of the Water Crisis Committee included:...
Council Whip: Cllr. ML Setabela-Lesenyeho
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Utility Services: Cllr. Xoli Masena
Committee Members:
Cllr. Rene Steyn
Cllr. Stephan Pienaar
Cllr. Mookho Nqeobo
Cllr. MJ Rantso
Cllr. Thomas Macingwane
During the site visit, officials from Vaal Central Water (VCW) provided a comprehensive tour of the facility,
detailing its operational processes and infrastructure challenges.
The delegation gained insight into the ongoing maintenance and upgrades being undertaken by VCW to enhance the
plant’s efficiency and reliability. These improvements are crucial in ensuring a sustainable and uninterrupted
water supply to residents.
The visit not only strengthened the committee’s technical understanding of the plant’s operations but also
reinforced the importance of proactive intervention and collaboration between the Municipality and water service
providers.
To further monitor progress, the committee is scheduled to conduct another visit in July 2025 to assess
developments and evaluate the impact of the ongoing infrastructure improvements.
