Matjhabeng Local Municipality is experiencing a disturbing rise in cable theft incidents, and the effects are being felt
across all corners of our communities. These criminal acts continue to disrupt essential services such as electricity
supply, street lighting, water pump operations, and traffic management systems.
As a result, neighborhoods are plunged into darkness, businesses suffer financial losses, learners are left without
power at schools, and critical infrastructure is brought to a standstill.
Cable theft not only endangers the well-being and security of our residents, but it also poses a serious risk to human
life, particularly in areas where electricity is vital for medical equipment, public safety, and traffic control. In
many instances, affected areas remain without power for extended periods due to the complex and costly process of
sourcing and installing replacement cables....
The damage caused by these crimes runs into millions of rands, diverting much-needed funds away from other service
delivery programmes such as road repairs, housing, and water infrastructure.
THE IMPACT OF CABLE THEFT:
* Prolonged electricity outages that leave homes, schools, and businesses in the dark
* Disruption of water supply in areas where pumps rely on electricity
* Public safety risks due to non-functional streetlights and traffic signals
* Delays in service delivery as municipal teams are forced to redirect resources
* Increased maintenance and replacement costs for stolen and damaged infrastructure
* Economic instability for local businesses that rely on consistent power
* Reduced quality of life for residents, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly and children
WHAT YOU CAN DO: HELP US PROTECT OUR INFRASTRUCTURE
Matjhabeng Municipality calls on all residents, businesses, and community leaders to be alert and take an active stand
against cable theft. Your eyes and ears on the ground are our strongest weapons against this destructive crime.
If you witness any suspicious activity near municipal electrical boxes, power lines, or substations — especially during
odd hours — report it immediately to:
* SAPS Crime Stop: 08600 10111
* Municipal Control Room: 057 3013911
You can remain anonymous. Every tip-off helps.
CABLE THEFT IS NOT JUST A CRIME – IT’S AN ATTACK ON SERVICE DELIVERY, SAFETY, AND DEVELOPMENT.
Let’s stand together to protect what belongs to all of us.
Report it. Don’t ignore it. Fight it.

The Road Maintenance Team remains hard at work across Matjhabeng, tackling potholes that have worsened due to recent
rainy weather conditions. The persistent rains have significantly contributed to the deterioration of road surfaces,
leading to an increase in pothole formations.

As part of the resolutions adopted by the Mayoral Committee under the leadership of the Executive Mayor, Cllr.
Thanduxolo Khalipha, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality is placing strong emphasis on the acceleration and
intensification of service delivery efforts, particularly around waste management and environmental cleanliness.
This week, our Community Services teams have been hard at work removing illegal dumping sites in the Central Business
District....
Simultaneously, other dedicated teams have been deployed across various towns in Matjhabeng to tackle similar
environmental challenges.
These clean-up operations form part of the broader municipal strategy to restore dignity to our communities
and promote a healthy, safe living environment for all.
We urge all residents to be active partners in building a cleaner Matjhabeng. Please refrain from illegal dumping and
make use of the designated waste collection days and municipal waste disposal facilities.
