Executive Mayor Khalipha Welcomes Mogale City Delegation to Share Insights on Disaster Response and Community
Restoration
In a significant gesture of solidarity and knowledge exchange, the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality,
Cllr. Thanduxolo Khalipha, today welcomed a delegation from Mogale City comprising Ward Councillors and officials from
the Institute for Social Dialogue....
The purpose of the engagement was to facilitate a collaborative session addressing the ongoing human settlement
challenges in Nyakallong, particularly the disaster-stricken Voël Pan area.
The Mogale City delegation shared their firsthand experience in managing a comparable disaster in Swanneville—an area
that, much like Nyakallong, faced socio-environmental crises affecting housing, basic services, and human dignity.
Through a comprehensive presentation, the delegation outlined the steps they took to stabilise the situation in
Swanneville, emphasising community dialogue, intergovernmental support, and rapid response mechanisms.
The session, attended by the Acting Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure and the Executive Director
for Infrastructure, provided a platform for robust discussion and learning.
The Mogale delegation reiterated their commitment to supporting Matjhabeng Municipality’s efforts in restoring safe and
dignified living conditions in Nyakallong, offering to share technical expertise, stakeholder engagement models, and
community mobilization tools.
Executive Mayor Khalipha expressed his appreciation for the solidarity shown by Mogale City and acknowledged the value
of shared municipal learning in tackling such complex human settlement issues. He reaffirmed Matjhabeng’s dedication to
resolving the Nyakallong disaster—particularly the Voël Pan area—which has been officially recognized as a humanitarian
concern and a severe violation of residents’ dignity and rights.
The engagement was also attended by the local ward councillors directly affected by the Voël Pan situation, accompanied
by their ward committee members, and representatives of the affected households.
Their presence underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue that places community voices at the center of
sustainable recovery efforts.
